Robert Oakes & Katherine Smith
Alternative, Country, and Americana
Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
Both Robert Oaks & Katherine Smith were born into musical families and started performing at a very young age. Robert began as a kid singing and playing bass guitar with his blues-singing father's band, and later, he played and sang in countless garage bands with his brother John and friends from surrounding New Jersey towns. Kate, whose grandfather, aunts and uncles, father and mother all sang, started harmonizing as a teenager with her parents' Connecticut-based choral group. She then went on to perform musical theater and pop songs in school shows. Robert and Kate met in 2007 while Robert was working on his 2009 album 'Heart Broken Open'. Kate contributed vocals and artwork to that project, and the two quickly realized there was even more to be drawn from this collaboration. The duet formed in the winter of 2010, as they began arranging some of Robert's earlier material and writing new songs together.

GARNET ROGERS, guest Shawn Taylor
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Garnet Rogers has established himself as "One of the major talents of our time." Hailed by the Boston Globe as a "charismatic performer and singer," Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence --close to six and a half feet tall-- with a voice to match. With his "smooth, dark baritone" (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music --like the man himself-- is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs "give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart" (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

World
Ossining Kirtan at St. Paul's parish hall

Ossining, NY   See Map
Kirtan is the practice of devotional singing to the Divine through the use of Sanskrit mantras. A form of ‘bhakti’ yoga (the yoga of devotion), this powerful, transformational spiritual practice is considered an easy path to liberation. Kirtan opens the heart, purifies the entire being and the surrounding atmosphere and stills the mind.

If you have never been to one, rest assured it is a solemn, holy experience that is also a ton of fun! If you like to sing, clap, bang on a percussion instrument, or are simply open to new ways to pay homage to your highest Self, your Being, the Divine Presence, God, Vishnu, or whatever signpost to the Ineffable you like to use, then we encourage you to come and give it a try.

Held every 3rd Thursday of the month!

Stravinsky's "Rite Of Spring" for solo piano
with Neil Alexander, String Trio Of New York
Classical/Opera
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Pianist/ Composer Neil Alexander celebrates the forthcoming release of his 1st solo piano CD with a performance of his daring solo piano transcription of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring (Sacre Du Printemps)” at the Falcon, opening for the String Trio of NY. Originally written as an Orchestral ballet score, the striking dissonances and powerful rhythms of this monumental work caused a legendary riot at the 1911 premier in Paris. The work is considered to be the birth of 20th century classical music, and heralded new standards of rhythm and harmony, influencing music for generations. After receiving a copy of the rehearsal score in 1982 (for 2 pianos / 4 hands), Neil became entranced with the piece and began restructuring it for 2 hands - a process that took approximately 15 years. He performed the piece several times a year from 1998 until 2002, and is performing it again several times this year including 2 performances for a Dance choreographed by Jonthan Reidel (May 13 & 14).

Phineas and the Lonely Leaves
with Tim Feeney
Acoustic, Pop/Soft Rock
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is a band which bares its sound with a reverence for simplicity. This band is a showcase for the evolution of Tim's songwriting ability which has matured into a concise, literal romantic vision. With little more than his voice, his hooks and an acoustic guitar he has managed to conjure a vibe that hints at a life full of secret struggles and recent triumphs. Nestled deep, somewhere between the vintage classic bleariness of Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons and contemporaries like Wilco, Death Cab for cutie, Bright Eyes, and Nada Surf, Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is the sound of a man finally realizing his gifts. Phineas and the Lonely Leaves provide a perfect soundtrack for those quiet midnight hours spent lying next to that one you love or sitting alone in the dark wondering whatever happened to that one who once owned your heart.

The Reddan Brothers are a hard hitting blues/rock trio with the miles to back it. The Reddan Brothers grew up backing legends of blues and rock such as Bill Perry, Popa Chubby and Jimmy Vivino. With their newly released CD “Skeleton Key Sessions” those road miles seem to be put to good use. The group has been seen on such high profile gigs as Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble, Winchester Blues House Festival and the Blues on the Bridge Festival. The youthful energy of the band mixed with seasoned playing makes them a must see trio.

Hosted by Bruce & Jeanne Hildenbrand, this is a monthly music series showcasing two (uh.. actually three!) area musicians.

DAVE KEARNY "lets loose in a powerful way onstage, in a style reminiscent of a cowboy archetype – singing sad, slow songs that lead nearly every guest in attendance to cock his or her head to the side and think about someone they long for."

ELLY WININGER is "A folk-blues legend." " ...Stunning ...Sparkling..." "Incredible picking..." "Pure energy, heart, and humor in one great folk performance." "She's beyond category...." "The woman is a musical explosion."

MARJI ZINTZ is "...one in a million, no SIX million..." “Beautiful, bluesy, and crystal clear!!” "...you could hear a pin drop during Marji's performance..." “...a voice like fine crystal...” "...Marji completely captivates the room..."

Pesky J. Nixon (PJN) has always feared small elevators and unintentional feedback (the speaker kind, not the criticism kind). With five years of melding and exploring Americana, Traditional, and Urban Folk influences Pesky J. Nixon has become one of those bands you can’t well shake out of your head. With tunes as catchy as their stage presence is endearing, these boys are winning fans straight up and down the East Coast. oining the Pesky Boys will be Plume Giant, who’s members, Nolan, Oliver, and Eliza, can be found boozily awaiting the spring on front porches across the nation. If they were perfumes, they would be lavender, ginger and honey, and if they were legumes, they would be parsnips, parsnips and parsnips. They’re Plume Giant, a retro folk trio with no frontman, just guitar, violin, viola, and three voices.

Essential listening for advocates of electric-jazz.~ Glenn Astarita, jazzreview.com

When separate components come together to make a powerful reaction, a bigger reaction than that made by their individual parts, you have witnessed the principle of fusion-Richie Goods and Nuclear Fusion are the embodiment of that principle in action.

with The Drew Bordeaux Group, featuring Andrew Bordeaux, Alex Nolan, Matt Graff, and Amanda Ruzza
Rock (classic)
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
They're taking the NYC music scene by storm! These four talented musicians fuse Alternative Rock with funky Blues "beneath smooth, smoke-and-whiskey vocals", creating a sound that is unique and exciting. They perform at top NYC venues like the Canal Room, the Bitter End and the National Underground, and we're privileged to welcome them back to 12 Grapes. The DBG features the multi-talented Drew Bordeaux on guitar, vocals and electric fiddle, Amanda Ruzza on bass/vocals, Matt Graff on drums and Alex Nolan on guitar.

NY music reviewer Kevin Johnston wrote this about Drew: "When he sings, there are times when he gets so excited you think he's going to jump straight up and disappear... His guitar work is the real deal... A lot of players have forgotten what the rock solo is for, but Drew knows and he uses it to take the music to a new level. And just to make sure you stay interested, he switches to electric violin." Bam.
